Higher the body fat in the body causes a higher risk of developing life-threatening diseases such as increased blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiac disease. Anemia, bone loss and decreased immune function caused due to the low value of BMI.

Children, adult’s body weight complications screened out by BMI. It overestimates body fat in muscular bodies and athletes. It underestimates body fat in people with low muscle mass and older adults.

  • Healthy weight value range – 18.5 to 24.9.
  • Overweight range – 25 to 29.9.
  • Obese range – 30 to 39.9.

Energy imbalance in the body results in weight gain because energy from food is necessary for the body to function. Energy obtained from food considered as calories.

When the same amount of calories taken into the body it uses/burns in the same way hence weight is also balanced. Therefore more calories intake results in weight gain.

Likewise, genetics, different types of food intake, physical activity all these determines body weight. BMI determines our health condition, therefore, more the BMI value then firstly one needs to reduce their value to keep a healthy body. Higher the value of BMI greater chances of spoiling the health condition like,

  • High BP,
  • Liver disease,
  • High sugar level,
  • Gallstones and

Some research shows that two in four people having healthy BMI are suffering from serious health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes etc.

BMI may not reflect the stored place of body fat, likewise, a person may get healthier BMI value while carrying a high amount of body fat around the waist, while one may get higher BMI value by having body fat in hips or thighs.

2017 research says that people carrying weight in the middle an having healthy BMI value is at high risk of obtaining serious life-threatening conditions than people carrying weight in other parts of the body having high BMI value.

CONCLUSION

Accumulation of fat in the body is generally termed as obesity. Based on the person’s height, weight and sex if the body weight of the person is more than 20% or exceeds than the recommended body weight then the person is considered as obese.

That is what is called BMI (BODY MASS INDEX) which measures body fat. BMI calculated using height and weight of the person. BMI value with less than 18.5 considered underweight. Value of 25-30 is overweight while above 30 is obese. A healthy BMI value between the range of 18.5 to 24.9.

Building-up fat in the body may lead to severe life-threatening conditions such as obesity.
