Introduction

Cardiovasular diseases are the major concern these days. In today’s world, a large number of people across the globe are suffering from the heart diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, nearly 17.7 million people die every year from the cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The diseases associated with heart and blood vessels are known as the cardiovascular diseases.

What comes to your mind after hearing the term ‘cardiovascular’ or ‘heart’ disease?

Well! Whenever I hear this word, some critical condition of heart attack comes to my mind immediately. But actually, the heart attack is not the only disease associated with the cardiovascular system. There are many diseases which do not allow the heart to function properly. For example- hypertension (high B.P), heart failure (heart does not pump blood), cardiac arrest (heart stops beating), angina (chest pain), coronary heart disease (blockage in arteries), arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) etc. Therefore, it is very necessary to put it to your knowledge that cardiovascular disease is a huge bunch of heart diseases.

Causes of cardiovascular diseases

Unhealthy eating practices, busy schedule and stressful life give an invitation to the cardiovascular disorders. Now-a-days everyone has a busy schedule. Nobody has time to take care of his/her health. Everyone is busy in running in the race of the life in order to chase their dreams. As a result, they started adopting unhealthy lifestyle practices.

Unhealthy lifestyle practices include- Lack of physical activity, High preference to fast foods, Intake of alcohol and Cigarette smoking.

Probably, high consumption of fast food, increases the level of cholesterol in the body. Due to lack of physical activity, this cholesterol does not get metabolized and its level keeps on increasing in the body. This condition is known as Hyperlipidemia. It is one of the major cause of cardiovascular disease.

Hyperlipidemia

It is commonly known as high cholesterol. In this condition, the level of lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides are very high in the blood.

Cholesterol and triglycerides are the fatty substances. There are two types of cholesterol- LDL and HDL. LDL is a Low-density lipoprotein which is known as ‘bad cholesterol’. On the other hand, HDL is a High-density lipoprotein which is considered as ‘good cholesterol’.

However, when the level of these substances increases then it starts depositing on the walls of the blood vessels and form plaque. With the passage of the time, the plaque becomes longer and begin to clog up the arteries (blood vessels which carry oxygenated blood). Thus, lead to the cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke.

How to control hyperlipidemia?

There are many ways by which hyperlipidemia can be controlled. Some of them are:

1. Lifestyle changes

In order to protect yourself from the cardiovascular diseases, it is necessary to change your stressful lifestyle. There are various ways by which a person can change his/her lifestyle. Even, the small changes can bring a large difference in the condition.

A. Take a healthy diet

A healthy diet plays a very crucial role in keeping the body fit and fine. It plays a vital role in keeping your body active. This helps in boosting immunity. A healthy and balanced diet can protect the human body from the cardiovascular diseases. A diet that contains all the nutrients required by our body is known as a healthy diet. This diet is free from a large number of calories which increases the level of cholesterol in the body.  Therefore, switching to a healthy diet can  avoid the condition of hyperlipidemia and hence, reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

B. Physical exercise

Physical exercise is the best way to keep the body healthy. A regular exercise helps in increasing the metabolism of the body. It also removes the harmful toxins from the body. Therefore, this way can be used to manage the condition of hyperlipidemia and hence,  reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. As it increases the level of good cholesterol in the body, therefore, it can contribute in encouraging the heart health.

C. Weight reduction

Obesity is one of the major cause of hyperlipidemia which can lead to various cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, by reducing weight such life-threatening conditions can be avoided. A person can adopt a low- calorie diet and a routine of regular exercise in order to lose weight.

2. Quit smoking

Smoking is one of the factors that contribute in raising the condition of hyperlipidemia. Actually, smoking lowers the levels of good cholesterol. Not only this, but it also raises the level of triglycerides in the body. This can put a smoker at a high risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is very necessary to quit smoking in order to manage hyperlipidemia.

3. Hyperlipidemic drugs

This is one more way to control the condition of hyperlipidemia. The drugs that lower the level of LDL and increases the level of HDL are known as hyperlipidemic drugs. These agents either decrease the production of carriers of cholesterol and triglycerides or increase the degradation of lipoproteins. Both the condition helps in decreasing the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the body. Therefore, reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Drug agents like statins, Niacin and cholesterol absorption inhibitors can be used as a medication to treat the condition of hyperlipidemia. These drugs are highly effective in this treatment. These agents reduce the level of cholesterol and hence, lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Statins and Niacin can be used together as a fixed dose combination to manage hyperlipidemia effectively. A fixed-dose combination of Lovastatin and long-acting Niacin is widely prescribed by the doctors.

Conclusion

Hyperlipidemia is a major cause of various cardiovascular diseases. Nearly 31% of the total population of the world is suffering from this condition. A large number of people die every year because of cardiovascular diseases. It is very necessary to take this matter into consideration before you become one of them.  Therefore, lifestyle changes, exercise and medications are some of the ways which can be adapted to prevent such condition. Even, It can spare the lives of countless people who are at the highest risk of cardiovascular diseases.
